How to Stay Safe

RentMate Ghana connects you directly with landlords. Read this before meeting anyone or making any payment.

🚨 Red flags — walk away immediately
They ask for money before you view the property
No legitimate landlord in Ghana asks for a deposit, reservation fee, key money, or any payment before you have physically entered and inspected the property. If someone asks for money first — it is a scam. Full stop.
They say the landlord is abroad and can't meet
This is one of the most common scams. A "caretaker" shows you the property and collects fees. The real owner knows nothing about it. Always insist on speaking with the actual owner before paying anything.
They create urgency — "pay today or lose it"
Scammers pressure you to pay before you think clearly. A real landlord will give you time to inspect, ask questions, and make a calm decision. Urgency is a manipulation tactic.
The rent is unusually low for the area
If a 3-bedroom in East Legon is listed at GH₵800/month, it is not a bargain — it is bait. Research typical rents in the area before viewing. If it seems too good to be true, it is.
They want payment via Mobile Money only — no receipt
Always get a written receipt for any payment. Serious landlords provide receipts. If someone refuses to give you paperwork, do not pay.
✓ What safe deals look like
You view first, pay after
A legitimate landlord shows you the property, answers your questions, and only discusses payment after you are satisfied. Never pay before viewing.
You meet the actual owner or their authorised agent with ID
Ask to see the landlord's ID and proof of ownership (title deed, utility bill in their name, or lease agreement). A real owner will not object to showing this.
You receive a written tenancy agreement before paying
Any payment should come with a signed tenancy agreement that includes: both full names, property address, rent amount, payment schedule, and duration. Keep a copy.
Bring someone you trust to the viewing
Never view a property alone, especially for the first time. Bring a friend, family member, or trusted person. Scammers rely on you being alone and vulnerable.
